IIT Kharagpur is offering a free online course called Machine Learning for Earth System Science for students

IIT Kharagpur is offering a new free online course on Machine Learning this time under the National Technology Enhanced Learning Scheme. The course called Machine Learning for Earth System Science has two credit points and would be most appropriate for undergraduate, postgraduate, and research students. Participants who take a free online course on the NPTEL platform can also obtain certificates on the condition of paying Rs 1000 and taking an exam on the date indicated.

The free online course on Machine Learning will be led by Adway Mitra, Assistant Professor at the Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at IIT Kharagpur. The professor works in the field of machine learning and its applications in climate, remote sensing and modeling of physical processes. He designed and launched the Machine Learning for Earth System Sciences course at IIT Kharagpur, which has been offered every spring semester since 2020, the NPTEL website says.

What will the IIT Kharagpur Free Online Course on Machine Learning Cover?

The course will begin with a review of relevant spatiotemporal statistics and data mining concepts, after which it will move on to topics of Earth system observations, Earth system data analysis, and Earth system modeling in various fields, such as hydrology, climate and soil. Some of the topics that will be covered in the course are:

• Summary of probabilities, and spatio-temporal statistics.
• Summary of relevant machine learning and deep learning techniques.
• Understanding of Earth system processes and related case studies.
• Earth system modeling and relevant concepts and applications in different fields.

The course is most suitable for undergraduate, postgraduate and research students pursuing a degree in computer science and engineering. Participants should also have knowledge in the following areas:

The course will run online from July 25 to September 16, 2022, and the deadline to register for the course is August 1, 2022. Those who pay the required fee and earn 25% of the average of the top 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course, and 75% of 100 proctored certification exam results will be given electronic certificates with logos of NPTEL and IIT Kharagpur.
