How to Be a Shipbuilder: Free Online Course
For anyone who wants to deepen their knowledge of wooden boat building, this completely free online course on the traditional trade of shipwright will raise their awareness. There are no prerequisites to participate since the courses are only intended to prepare for the professional title of naval carpenter. Classes will take place online, twice a week from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., for a total of 9.30 p.m. of classes. The course is promoted by the Municipality of Monfalcone in partnership with the Framesport Interreg Italia-Croazia project and in collaboration with the Polo Tecnologico Alto Adriatico of Pordenone and the Cantiere Alto Adriatico Custom of Monfalcone. The deadline for registration is November 2n/a2022.
LEARN THE TRADITIONAL TRADE OF THE CHARRONNIER
This initiative is certainly one of a kind. Everyone who signs up for [email protected] before November 2n/a can participate in this free course covering many aspects of the traditional shipbuilding trade. The courses are not only aimed at those who wish to deepen their knowledge in the construction and restoration of wooden boats, but also at potential future shipbuilders and passionate about the profession. One of the primary objectives of this initiative is to preserve the traditional profession of carpenter, defined as such in 117 of the Italian navigation code.
There are no prerequisite to participate since the courses are only intended to prepare for the professional title of naval carpenter.
The lesson, In English and for free, will take place on line from early November to December 2022. It will consist of 20 hours of live streaming and 1h30 of pre-recorded lessons. The two-hour lessons twice a week are held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., generally on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated to participants well in advance. The final dates of the courses will be communicated to you by email.
The training course for naval carpenters is organized by the Municipality of Monfalcone (Gorizia), partner of the European project FRAMESPORT INTERREG ITALY-CROATIA. The objective of this project is to strategically coordinate integrated and sustainable development initiatives for small ports, enabling them to be socially proactive as economic drivers of development along the Adriatic coast. This cross-border pilot program will be located in Monfalcone and will work in close collaboration with the Polo Tecnologico Alto Adriatico of Pordenone and the Cantiere Alto Adriatico Custom of Monfalcone.
The topics, divided into modules, that will be covered during the course are:

- Teaching methodology and individual exercises

- Maritime history and tradition in the Adriatic Sea
- Types of wooden, sailing and motor boats
- Ship construction plans
- Types of wood used in shipbuilding
- Traditional and historical wooden constructions
- High sustainability in new materials (and European strategic objectives of ecological sustainability)
Techniques with know-how in the restoration of wooden boats
- Brief introduction to wooden boat design – the advantages of using wood for construction
- Ship’s lines – read and understand design drawings
- Restoration of wooden boats – a conservative or philological philosophy
- Repair of wooden boats
- Bonding systems
- Inspect to determine damaged and critical items
- Assess necessary restoration interventions

- New design software for redevelopment

TEACHERS AND ESTABLISHMENTS
Here are the seven professors who will present the subjects:
Giovanni Francesco Scolariprofessor of information technology with 40 years of management experience in large companies such as Accenture, Montedison, Electrolux and Pirelli.
Alessandra Gruppi, holder of a degree in economics and banking, an MBA in international business, a master’s degree in business coaching and NLP, is president of Strategia & Controllo, responsible for strategic planning and control, startups and business coaching. She is a professor of strategic marketing at the MIB School of Management and collaborates in training at several business schools and international institutions.
Cristina FonzarMarketing & Communication Consultant at Strategia & Controllo, is an expert in operational and strategic marketing, luxury marketing, communication and public relations, organization and management of events, launch and development of new products.
Federico Lenardon is a carpenter, designer and shipbuilder at Cantiere Alto Adriatico Custom. He was the only student allowed at the design table of Carlo Sciarrelli, the maestro of classic yacht design who died in 2006. Federico is the living memory of the historic designer and carries on the tradition of Sciarrelli.
Odilon Simonit is a passionate shipbuilder and racing sailor who, after ten years at the Hannibal shipyard, founded Cantiere Alto Adriatico Custom in 2006 with his partner Paolo Skabar.
Alessio Visintinwith more than 20 years of experience in 3D graphics, virtual reality and yacht design, is the project manager of SimCoVR, established in 1995. This company also specializes in professional engineering services using virtual reality and increased in a maritime environment.
Luigi Valanresponsible for the FAB.LAB FVG of Friuli Innovazione, which is part of the project and technology transfer office of the INNOVA FVG consortium, a research organization in the Friuli-Veneto-Gullia autonomous region that manages the Amaro Technology and Science Park (Udine).
